If you have an awning on your RV greater than 18 feet in length, chances are that it’s sagging in the middle. When traveling down the road, a longer awning roller will tend to bounce up and down every time the RV bounces. Over time, this can cause the awning to sag, put undue stress on the awning support arms, and may even cause the support arms to become detached. This is the extreme case but nevertheless it can happen. So what to do? Do the awning center support mod.
There are a few ways to support the center of the awning. The simplest and one of the most effective is the awning support cradle. This is mounted to the side of the RV under the middle of the awning roller. It has a curved support surface that cradles the roller, preventing the awning from sagging. The cradle pivots out of the way when the awning is unrolled so there is no setup or removal of any parts.
There is also the awning roller strap. While this product isn’t directly designed to provide awning sag support, but does so as a bonus. It’s primary use is to prevent the awning from unrolling during travel. But due to it’s design, it does provide some support. The strap is affixed to the side of the RV just like the center support cradle described above. However, instead of supporting the weight of the roller from the bottom like the cradle does, it wraps around the roller and latches to its mount. This prevents the roller from unfurling and provides some addition vertical support.
Of course, all this could be easily, albeit more expensively, solved by installing an automatic retractable awning. Sunsetter and A&E are manufacturers of these types of awnings. They are costly but I think worth it for the convenience. But that is another mod for another day.

After years of suffering through blazing summer sun and temperamental weather for a good portion of the remaining year, I decided to connect a porch awning to my home and my sanity. Honestly, I had to do it out of sheer necessity. I don’t know where you live, but I reside in eastern Washington, which is basically all high desert. The sun scorches in the summer and because the western part of the state gets so much moisture, we’re also prone to unpredictable and sporadic rain showers.
Because my wife and I hate being cooped up in the house when the weather is at all nice, and because we also have friends over regularly, the decision to invest in a porch covering for our home was an easy one in the end. We’ve had it for a couple of weeks now and the difference that it’s made in the quality of our lives in that short amount of time is truly astounding. It was not a painless process however. Partly due to the fact that I can be bit of a knucklehead when it comes to the ‘construction arts’, and partly due to the incredible confusion I was subjected to by a few shady contractors.
So I would like to share with anyone who is thinking of installing an outdoor awning how to do it the simplest and ultimately the cheapest way.
The first mistake we made (and the first you should avoid), was calling out contractors for bids when we weren’t even set on the kind of covering we wanted to install. Here’s an insider tip: Building contractors want to build the most expensive thing they can. So if you don’t have a pretty concrete idea about what you want i.e. a permanent structure, a retractable awning, a solar awning, etc, then I can tell you that based on my experience 9 out 10 contractors will try to convince you of the glorious virtues of building a permanent framed structure. Why? Because it’s a lot more money in their pocket ultimately.
So do your homework before hand. There are a lot of choices available. What are the needs for your family or situation? If you’re planning on living in your house for the next 10-15 years then building a permanent structure might make sense. Remember though that it is by far the most expensive of your options. The average bid I received to build a permanent covering for a 200 sq. ft area was around 20k. Fortunately for my kids I wasn’t willing to dip into their college fund, so that was a no go.
Eventually we decided to buy a retractable microfiber awning. It was nice solution for us for several reasons. First off the price was right. The whole process cost us just under 3,200. This included consultation, all materials, and installation. Secondly, the ability to retract the covering during cool weather and less seasonal sun was an attractive prospect. Also the technology involved in modern awning fabrics is was a major factor. These aren’t the clunky canvass awnings our grandparents used to rock. The new microfiber stuff is light, waterproof, UV ray safe, and a snap to maintain. The fact that it has a 30 year guarantee doesn’t hurt either.
I think it’s the best of both worlds. On one hand it gives you great stability. The awning is actually connected to the outside wall of your home so it won’t budge. And on the other hand it provides a large and attractive covering for most porch or deck areas. We went with one of the better known company’s in the market to handle the project and all in all the experience we had with them was pretty hassle free and straight forward. They even sent us a free DVD explaining what they offered and how to choose the right model for our location. It definitely helped the process go more quickly once we met with the installers.
What can I say. I’ll be barbecuing and relaxing on my patio in comfort for years to come. It was well worth the investment.
